Why I use it
Its job in the stack
I use GIMP for image work that needs layers, masks, selections and detailed retouching without tying the source file to a subscription. It is capable enough for web assets, compositing and corrective work.
It also keeps an open tool in the stack. That matters when a collaborator needs access to the source without purchasing the same commercial suite.

Limits
What it does not solve
Interface conventions and some professional print workflows differ from dominant commercial tools. The delivery format should be agreed in advance.
