Why I use it

Its job in the stack

I use Matrix when open standards, federation or infrastructure control matter more than joining another closed team-chat vendor. It can support communities that need their own homes while still communicating across servers.

The freedom comes with operational decisions about clients, servers, moderation, encryption and retention. It is useful when someone is prepared to own those decisions.

Limits

What it does not solve

User experience and administration vary by client and homeserver. It is not automatically the easiest channel for a new contact.
