Why I use it
Its job in the stack
I use OpenRouter to compare model families and give compatible tools a consistent route to several providers. It is useful when the work needs choice or fallback without a separate integration for every model.
The additional layer needs scrutiny. Model identity, provider routing, data policy and cost must remain visible rather than disappearing behind a convenient endpoint.
Where it earns its place
Work I use it for
- 01Cross-model evaluation
- 02Provider fallback
- 03Unified API access
- 04Cost and capability routing
Limits
What it does not solve
Routing adds another dependency and policy surface. Sensitive work requires confirmation of the selected provider and retention terms.
